1960 Lotus Type 18 Formula Jr. |

I've been following the local vintage racing scene through CSRG and HMSA
events (that's how I found my Seven) for a number of years and it seemed sort of inevitable that I wouldn't be able to just watch from the pit lane
forever.
Brad Moore, who used to own my Seven and did quite a bit of work on it to get it back into respectable condition, was showing me a bunch of Seven parts that he wanted to sell when he said that he had one more item that I might want to have a look at. He pointed me at a frame that I had glimpsed earlier for some sort of race car, and said that he also had all of the rest of the parts for the Type 18. We went over everything that he had very carefully and I went away to think about it for awhile. A month or so later I went back again with a camera and we photographed nearly everything that he had for the 18. After a bit of research to try and determine whether the car was genuine (it is) we had a deal.
This is the sole photo I have of the car before it was disassembled. From the photos of the parts (the entire car) one can tell that a total restoration is required so that is finally underway. I am still trying to gather more history about the car, but here is what I know so far: Serial #: 18-J-819 Previous owners (most recent first):
Brad Moore
o Had car until '02.
o Car was essentially a basket case when he received it.
Lou Pavesi
o Had car in '86 (minimally).
o Al Norman positively identified this serial # as 18-J-819 based on rollbar setup without
even needing to look at the plate (but checking the plate confirmed it).
o Used to race against this car when Al Norman owned it.
o Believes car was setup to run Formula Ford when he received it. May not have had engine when
he received it. Can't say exactly what might have been done to the car while it was in his shop
and various people had access to it.
o Purchased new exhaust from Peter Denty Racing, but what is with car is most definitely not "new"
(someone in shop may have taken hammer to exhaust to get it to fit in modified frame or with
wrong type engine). Had new rear uprights, seat padding and rear trailing arms made.
o Have contact info. Still in Bay Area. Races actively.
Mike Foley
o Had car in '83 (minimally according to correspondence with machine shop in England, but that
correspondence is suspect and may have related to another car). Apparently owned 6 Lotuses
over a ten year span of time ending in '98. But according to correspondence, that would have been
a fifteen year period at a minimum.
o Car had flames painted on nose. Paintwork was subsequently changed by him.
o Car was started once.
o To quote: "My second Lotus was a 1960 Formula Junior Lotus 18 that I bought AFTER a GGLC meeting
very late one night. It was incomplete and unrestored, and painted with multi-colored flames on
the bonnet. I removed all the paint, but it stayed unrestored in my garage in Napa for too long.
I fired it up just once, prior to the club starting a wine tour of the Napa Valley from my house.
It made a lot of noise and I moved soon after to marvelous Marin. I sold the 18 to a vintage car
collector in Los Altos Hills." (Quote taken from http://www.gglotus.org/ggchap/98-00cr/98-cr10.htm)
o Moved to Maui, contact info unknown.
Didier Pecher
o Had car in '82 - '83 (minimally).
o Contact info unknown.
Rich Kenny
o Had car in '76 - '78 (minimally).
o Contact info unknown.
Skip Pack
o Had car in '73 - '75.
o Autocrossed extensively. Broke rear triangle three times and then decided he had had enough.
o Is not responsible for 18 F1 type rear bracing (was not on car at the time). Did not modify
frame. Lefthand gearshift. Frame color was gray.
o Ran the car with a crossflow engine, no rear bodywork, wide aluminum rims/tires and europa
rear uprights. Gearbox was Webster with two "first gears" as appropriate for autocross. Is not
sure how gearbox was mounted to chassis, but xflow engine bolted up and was used without need
for modifications. Used some form of "stock" exhaust.
o Car was orange with yellow around the nose.
o Autocrossing was done as part of 'Continentals Sports Car Club', part of 'Northern California
Sports Car Council' (this: http://www.ncscc.org/ may be their website).
o Has LeGrand Mk6 in mothballs.
o Recommends contacting Butch Gilbert because he may have contact info for other prior-owners.
o Have contact info. Still in Bay Area.
Ed Lynch
o Contact info unknown.
Al Norman
o Passed away.
Jay Chamberlain
o Took delivery of the car in December '60 (or early '61).
o No further relationship with car.
